Root
A root of a number $x$ is another number, which when multiplied by itself a given number of times, equals $x$. In algebra, a root (or zero) of an equation is a value for the unknown variable that makes the equation true.
Example
The square root of $36$ is $6$ because $6 \times 6 = 36$, written as $\sqrt{36} = 6$. For the equation $x^2 - 4 = 0$, the roots are $x = 2$ and $x = -2$.
