Proportion

A proportion is a mathematical statement or equation which shows that two ratios or fractions are perfectly equal. Proportions are widely used to solve problems involving unknown quantities in similar geometric figures or scaling recipes.

Example

If $2$ pens cost $5$ shillings, and we want to find the cost $x$ of $6$ pens, we can set up the proportion: $$ \frac{2}{5} = \frac{6}{x} $$ Solving for $x$ gives $x = 15$ shillings.
